Everything We Know About Denver

I love the Meadowlark in the Ballpark/RINO/Curtis Park neighborhood. I am biased because it is just blocks from my house, but take that away, and it’s still a great little hole in the wall… err… ground.

Located at 27th and Larimer, look for the plaque in the brick wall and the stairs heading down - you’ve found it. Open everyday from 4 pm to 2 am - even if you are the only ones in the joint they’ll keep it going for you. Last night we headed over for a few drinks out of boredom and - as always - it was great. When you first enter the bar you find what you most likely didn’t expect. Rather than a dingy dark hole, it’s actually has a great ambience with laquered wood bars, and an industrial feel. Stumble in on most weekday nights and you’ll also find live music or DJ’s on stage. In need of a quieter evening? Head out the back stairs and sit on the patio with a bucket of beer.

Other favorite features: bar tenders that don’t really know what they’re doing, so you get way too much booze in your drink (for a great price) after instructing them on how to make the perfect margarita just how you like it.

After the Derby Party on Saturday, I just couldn’t let the night end. So, naturally, post-after party I went to Earl’s followed by some real Denver gems including the Skylark and The Rock Bar.

At the Skylark Lounge (140 S. Broadway), we listened to some Johnny Cash covers by A Band Named Sue & Truckers Daughter downstairs in the dimly lit back booth, and then headed upstairs to hear a serious assortment of tunes surrounded by pool tables and the Roller Derby girls after party. This is a place that everyone should check out if you are in the Broadway area.

Next, my love the Rock Bar.  Dubbed Westword’s best new club 07, this Colfax bar has the variety you’ll love. Located at 3015 E. Colfax (Colfax and Milwaukee) at the front of the All Inn Motel. Some really great comments on it here. Best part: in an extremely ghetto hotel for those nights you just feel like really living it up, cheapish drinks, good crowd (variety - of people and music - which can be hard to come by in Denver). Worst: nasty bathrooms, can get a bit cancun-y sticky feeling in there.
